You don’t want to accomplish your goals. What you really want is reassurance that everything is going to be ok. What you really want is validation that how you are living your life is acceptable to the people around you. What you really want is to be able to round up support while talking about what you could do if you had more time, if you were luckier, if your boss wasn’t such a jerk, if... You don’t want to accomplish your goals because to do so would mean you’d have to change habits change your friends change what everyone might think of you change your life. You don’t want your goals bad enough because achieving them means that Middle Earth has to be traversed first and you’re afraid that the castle on the other end won’t look like you hoped it would when you finally get there. What you really want is structure. What you really want is to be told what to do so that the blame won’t fall on you. What you really want is specific terms of success.
